3M and BMW Group Mark 40 Years of Collaboration Driving Automotive Innovation
This year marks four decades of collaboration between 3M and the BMW Group — a partnership built on shared expertise in materials science, engineering innovation, and the pursuit of advanced automotive solutions.
The relationship began in 1986 with a pioneering door-sealing application for the BMW 7 Series (E32). Using 3M Weatherstrip Acrylic Foam Tape 4202, the project introduced an innovative tape-based sealing system designed to enhance interior acoustics and support the premium driving experience associated with BMW vehicles.
Over the past 40 years, the automotive landscape has transformed significantly. The industry has evolved through the rise of electrification, new vehicle architectures, increasingly sophisticated electrical and electronic systems, changing customer expectations, and a stronger focus on sustainability.
Throughout this transformation, 3M has continued to support automotive manufacturers and suppliers worldwide with materials science-driven solutions across key areas, including thermal management, electrical insulation and protection, bonding and sealing technologies, acoustic and vibration control, lightweighting, surface protection, and manufacturing process improvement.
“ This milestone reflects the value of long-term technical collaboration and shared innovation,” said Marcus Kucharz, 3M Strategic Account Director for the BMW Group. “What started as a targeted solution for premium vehicle acoustics has developed into a broader partnership focused on addressing evolving engineering, manufacturing, and business challenges. As mobility continues to advance, we remain committed to working together to create solutions for the future.”
Looking ahead, 3M will continue leveraging its materials science expertise to help automakers and suppliers address complex challenges in vehicle design, production efficiency, performance, and sustainability.
Through decades of collaboration, 3M and the BMW Group demonstrate how innovation, technical expertise, and partnership can help shape the future of mobility.
